Chalk Line

The chalk line is a handy tool that is used to mark straight lines on surfaces for construction, painting, and other projects. It consists of a body (also known as a chalk box) that contains colored chalk line powder and a reel of string that is pulled out and snapped against a surface to impart a brightly marked, easily visible line.

The end of the chalk line has a hook that can be hooked to objects to hold it in place and a handle for winding back into the chalk line body. When you are ready to use the chalk line, you should anchor one end of it with a nail or screw near where you will be marking the other end. This will allow you to pull out the line and snap it against a surface without it moving around while you’re attempting to make your measurements.

To prepare the chalk line for use, you should pour in enough powder to coat the entire length of string. Then, you should tap the body of the chalk line against a surface to help the chalk settle. After this, you can hook the pull tab end of the chalk line to a screw or nail at one end of your measurement and hand the other end of the chalk line to a helper who will walk to the other end of the distance to pop the line over the surface.

The color of the chalk line should match the surface that you’re using it on. Black chalk line is preferred for interior work because it contrasts well and can be easily cleaned up, while fluorescent-colored chalk lines are ideal for exterior projects as they’ll stand up to weather and won’t wash away in the rain.

Tape Measure

A tape measure is one of the most useful tools for any handyman. Having several different types and sizes of tape measures will help you get the job done, no matter the size or shape of the object you need to measure. Each tape measure has a few essential parts that you should be familiar with to get the most out of your tool.

The case or housing is the holder for the coiled tape and can be made of metal, plastic, or robust rubber that has been drop tested to ensure it withstands the impacts of being dropped on a worksite. The length of the housing is usually noted near the bottom of the case (although on some tapes it’s hidden beneath the belt clip).

Stick or Blade: The metal part at the end of the tape measure that’s often called a tab, tang, latch, lip, or clip serves several functions. It helps you remove the tape from the case and keeps it from disappearing inside when it recoils. It also allows you to take internal measurements without bending the tape, which can give you inaccurate readings. When taking internal measurements, start your measurement at the 1-inch mark rather than the end of the tape. This is called “burning an inch” and will improve the accuracy of your measurements.

Some tape measures have a nail grab or scribing tool at the end of the hook, which is useful for marking a surface without using a pencil. Others have a nail slot that lets you hang nails from the tape measure to hold them in place while drilling.

The shortest lines on a tape measure indicate millimeters, and the smallest increment is indicated by counting spaces; there are sixteen spaces in an inch. Some tapes have both imperial and metric measurements, with inches marked in red and centimeters in black.
